Jokerit Helsinki Hockey Club has today come to a decision to pull the team out of the Gagarin Cup playoffs of the Kontinental Hockey League. The decision was made on the basis of government guidelines given this week concerning the spread of the coronavirus.

Jokerit was scheduled to play against SKA Saint Petersburg in the second round of the Gagarin Cup playoffs starting on March 17th. After long talks held between club leadership, doctors and players, the decision was made not to travel to Saint Petersburg and withdraw the team from the playoffs. The decision was based on the concern over the health of players and staff as well as trying to slow down the spread of the coronavirus by following the guidelines given by the government and officials of the Finnish institute of health and welfare.

-These are exceptional times and they call for exceptional measures. The well-being and health of the people and our society is paramount and Jokerit wants to shoulder its responsibility in the matter. We have held thorough discussions with our team doctors and players and together come to this conclusion. It is a very difficult but necessary decision, said Jari Kurri, chairman of the board of Jokerit Helsinki Hockey Club.

Jokerit wishes all the clubs, who continue to play in the Gagarin Cup playoffs, the best of luck.

Jokerit wants to thank all the club’s supporters and partners for the season which had many memorable moments. Now it is time for everyone to focus on the well-being of ourselves and our loved ones in these trying times.
