The Boston University Terriers battled the Boston College Eagles in the 68th Annual Beanpot Tournament at TD Garden.

The first two Monday nights of February in Boston are reserved for the Beanpot, an annual hockey tournament that features Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern. It all started on Dec. 26, 1952 at the old Boston Arena. The following year the Beanpot moved to the Garden, where it has been played ever since.

The Boston University Terriers have a tournament-record of 30 Beanpot titles, and they earned a chance Monday night to add to their collection. A valiant comeback effort ended with a rebound goal and a 5-4 double-overtime win over fifth-ranked Boston College in the semifinals at TD Garden February 3.

The Terriers fell behind by two goals on two separate occasions, but stormed back in the third period to tie the game 3-3, take a brief lead, then surrender it with less than a minute in regulation, 4-4, sending the game into overtime.

The teams went to an NCAA-mandated five-minute overtime, and no one scored, forcing a tie in both teams’ official records. But for tournament purposes, the game continued, and finally ended when Wilmer Skoog found the back of the net at 7:20 of the second, sudden-death overtime period.
